Release date: June 29, 2023 Platform(s): PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, Nintendo Switch Developer: Yuke’s Publisher: THQ Nordic

Breathless. That’s the word that perfectly captures the explosive action and over-the-top excitement of AEW Fight Forever. It’s like a wild ride on a rollercoaster, filled with jaw-dropping moves and weapon-filled chaos. Punch, kick, grapple, slam, pin, and repeat! There’s no time to catch your breath in this arcade-inspired brawler. And you know what? That’s exactly what makes it so damn good!

Developer Yuke’s, known for their work on the WWE series, surprised everyone with AEW Fight Forever. Instead of a slow-burning, realistic simulation, they went all out on the craziness. Taking inspiration from classics like No Mercy and Fire Pro, this game is like a shot of adrenaline to the wrestling genre. It’s big, bold, brash, and a little bit daft.

In Fight Forever, there’s no need to worry about complex mechanics or defensive strategies. It’s all about building up your momentum bar to unleash devastating special moves and finishers. Punches and kicks are your bread and butter, while well-timed grapples can give you the upper hand. Keep an eye on your opponent’s body-part damage, but make sure your focus is on attacking! Finishers in this game hit with an emphatic oomph, like Jade Cargill’s face-planting Jaded, CM Punk’s skull-cracking GTS, or Kenny Omega’s shoulder-wrecking One-Winged Angel. Ouch!

AEW Fight Forever is all about chaos and mayhem, and it delivers in spades. The movement might be a bit janky, and the lack of commentary is a bummer, but who cares when you’re having this much fun? This game is packed with hilarious weapons like sprayable fire extinguishers and rideable skateboards. You’ll find football helmets, golf clubs, thumb tacks, and even flaming tables! And if that’s not enough, there are exploding barbed wire death matches that take things to a whole new level of insanity. Fire, blood, and jaw-dropping moments that’ll have you whooping and laughing uncontrollably. Just talking about it makes me want to drop everything and play it again right now!

While Fight Forever might lack some of the subtleties found in WWE 2K23, it excels in other areas. The AI of your teammates is light-years ahead of its big-budget rival. Tag matches turn into wild four-way brawls as each team tries to gain the advantage. And when it comes to pinning your opponent, your tag partner instantly jumps in to prevent any interruptions. It’s a godsend compared to WWE 2K23, where opponents race through the ropes while your buddies freeze on the apron, looking totally clueless.

But it’s not just the gameplay that shines in AEW Fight Forever. The Road To Elite career mode is an absolute blast. Divided into four-week blocks leading up to a pay-per-view, you get to choose various activities for your character like going to the gym, sightseeing, or eating out. Each choice has different effects on your character, like increasing momentum or replenishing energy while also providing some hilarious moments, like experiencing a local delicacy. The mini-games are a riot too, with Penta Says challenging you to match the luchador’s dance moves and the self-explanatory AEW Pop Quiz. These quirky additions add so much charm, and you can tell the developers had a blast creating them.

Intergender matches are another riotous addition to the Fight Forever package. Seeing Britt Baker and Chris Jericho going at it doesn’t feel out of place in this larger-than-life world. And the best part? You can play through the entire career mode as any wrestler on the roster, giving you the freedom to enjoy these fantasy matchups without any restrictions.

But here’s the catch. Once you’ve powered through the career mode multiple times, you might start to wonder if the explosive exhibition matches are enough to keep you coming back for more. There aren’t many long-term modes on offer, and the limited roster, even with DLC, is a concern. The absence of some popular AEW superstars without extra payments feels like a missed opportunity. Nevertheless, AEW Fight Forever’s promising debut as a unique and entertaining wrestling game shouldn’t be overlooked.

Don’t let those minor issues overshadow the fact that AEW Fight Forever is a game every wrestling fan needs to play. It’s a breath of fresh air in a genre that’s been dominated by one major franchise for too long. With its brash and bold arrival, we finally have two top-tier wrestling games to choose from. And with a bigger roster and expanded creation-sharing options, this hilarious one-off could very easily turn into an annual colossus.
