Asus ROG Raikiri Pro: A Controller that Hyped, but Didn’t Swipe Right

And boy, did they modify it. The Raikiri Pro is undeniably stunning, with its sleek design, ROG branding, and mesmerizing lighting. I mean, bringing this thing to a party would definitely make you the ultimate controller nerd.

But here’s the thing: looks alone don’t make a controller worth the hype. At $150 / £150, it’s reasonably priced for a pro controller, but there are cheaper alternatives out there that offer better ergonomics and overall performance.

The Raikiri Pro might resemble the DualSense controller for PS5, with its textured faceplates and tiny ROG inscriptions, but it unfortunately falls flat in crucial areas. The face buttons, for instance, are a challenge to read unless you press your face against the controller like a nosy detective.

Speaking of comfort, the Raikiri Pro borrows heavily from the standard Xbox Series X controller in terms of shape and build. It feels familiar, except for the textured grips that feel like sandpaper on your skin. It’s like a love-hate relationship, where your fingers are constantly reminded of that time you scratched a chalkboard.

But let’s not dwell on the gripes. The Raikiri Pro has some notable features, like the mesmerizing lighting that serves no practical purpose but steals the spotlight. Plus, it can connect via Bluetooth, making it a nifty companion for mobile gaming.

The controller also offers trigger stop switches and precise vibration, which adds a touch of finesse to the gameplay experience. However, the controller’s OLED display feels like a case of style over substance. Sure, you can change profiles, brightness, and…wait for it…the wallpaper. Because who doesn’t want their controller to double as a miniature art gallery?

In terms of performance, the Raikiri Pro leaves me scratching my head. The back buttons, although present, are oddly positioned and difficult to use, making me question their purpose. It’s like trying to play hopscotch while wearing clown shoes.

As for the analog sticks and face buttons, they work fine, albeit without any standout features. They’re like the dependable friends who never let you down, but also don’t bring anything exciting to the table.

So, should you buy the Asus ROG Raikiri Pro? It depends. If you want a flashy controller that looks great and offers some pro features, it’s worth considering. Especially if you have smaller hands and want a portable companion for your gaming adventures.

But if you’re seeking top-notch performance, there are other controllers out there that offer better ergonomics and functionality. And let’s not forget about the price tag. At $150, you want more than just a pretty face.

In the end, the Asus ROG Raikiri Pro falls short of the hype surrounding it. Sure, it has style, but substance should always come first. And in the world of gaming, function reigns supreme.
