FF16 won me over with its customizable combat in a JRPG setting.

Final Fantasy 16: Unleash the Combat Chaos!

Prepare yourself for combat in Final Fantasy 16 – it’s a wild ride! Picture this: swinging big swords, unleashing epic Eikon abilities, dodging like a pro, and even commanding a dog. It’s a whole circus of chaos, but fear not, my fellow gamers! The developers at Square Enix have given us the power to decide how much we want to engage with this madness.

Right from the get-go, Final Fantasy 16 breaks away from the traditional turn-based actions that we’ve come to know and love. Instead, it embraces a more action-oriented system that takes the combat of Final Fantasy 15 to a whole new level. It’s like Final Fantasy’s rebellious teen phase, without any pretense.

Combo Juggling: Unleash Your Inner Showstopper!

Are you ready to be the star of the show? Final Fantasy 16 lets you create mind-blowing combos that will leave your enemies in awe. Chaining together a series of abilities into a devastating combo is incredibly satisfying. It’s like being the protagonist in your own stylish action game, just like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry. And you know what? Final Fantasy 16 has got the same pedigree, thanks to combat director Ryota Suzuki, who worked on Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon’s Dogma.

But hey, I get it. All this combo stuff can be overwhelming. We shouldn’t have to be button-pressing wizards to enjoy the coolest parts of the game. Lucky for us, the core members of the development team seem to agree.

“I’ve spent my career making action games. And I feel that through that experience, I know exactly what those action gamers want and what the hardcore action gamers want,” Suzuki previously told us during a demo of Final Fantasy 16 earlier this year. “But this game, again, the core concept design is not making a game just for those gamers, it’s making a game for the gamers that are Final Fantasy fans or fans that are not used to action types of games and creating something that doesn’t leave them behind, and that includes them in the experience as well. And so making a system that will be fun for all gamers was my top priority.”

Welcome, my friends, to the realm of the “Timely Accessories.” These little wonders will enhance your Final Fantasy 16 adventure, even if you’re not a combo virtuoso (like most of us). While I haven’t finished the game yet, I’ve already got my hands on four of these lifesavers. Three were available right from the start, and the fourth was unlocked as soon as that specific system was introduced. They may not be considered accessibility settings, but they definitely address the same issues.

“I think I’d likely have given a pass to Final Fantasy 16 if it actually asked me to keep up with its combat on its own terms.”

I may not be as spry and quick as I used to be (I’m a seasoned gamer, after all), but fear not, my fellow warriors. One of these accessories allows me to chain attacks effortlessly with a single button. Another handles dodging whenever it’s appropriate. There’s even one that automatically uses potions when needed. And of course, let’s not forget the joy of controlling Torgal, the faithful hound. You bet I equipped as many of these as I could. The combo accessory even includes Torgal’s moves because, well, who doesn’t want a dog in their combo?

Could I play without these angelic accessories? Probably. Do I want to? Probably not. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate the challenge of games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, but sometimes I just want to sit back, enjoy the ride, and not stress about keeping up with the combat on its own terms. Final Fantasy 16 lets me do just that, thanks to these helpful companions.

Thanks to these lovely little helpers, I’ve fallen in love with the wild and action-packed combat of Final Fantasy 16. I’ve immersed myself in the relationships of Clive, Jill, Cid, Joshua, and the rest of the crew. The world feels alive, and the characters feel like old friends. I’m determined to see this adventure through to the end, which is a rare commitment for me outside of work-related games. Final Fantasy 16, you’ve won my heart with your thoughtful design decisions.

Final Fantasy 16 is now available on PS5. Despite its recent release, it has already secured a spot among the best Final Fantasy games of all time.
