Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel: A Joyride for Serious Sim Racers

Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel

Logitech has long been a household name for casual racing sim enthusiasts, but with the new Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel, they’ve shifted gears into the realm of serious sim racing. This sleek and powerful wheel offers smooth control with its punchy 11nm of torque, making it a force to be reckoned with on the track. Paired with its customizable load cell brake pedal, the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel is a pro-grade package that demands attention.

However, be prepared to shell out a hefty price tag of £1348/$1348 for the complete package on Xbox/PC or PS5/PC. But hey, in this game, you definitely get what you pay for. So, will the Logitech G Pro take the chequered flag? Let’s find out!

A Fresh New Look with Superior DNA

Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel

At first glance, the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel exudes a familiar charm. Its design carries the DNA of its predecessor, the Logitech G920, but with a noticeable upgrade. It’s like the G920 has gone off to college and returned as a whole new wheel, ready to take on the world. The bigger size, smoother feel, and premium appearance make it a natural evolution of its predecessor.

While it’s true that the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel is predominantly made of plastic, don’t let that fool you. The build quality screams premium, and the plastic doesn’t look or feel cheap. After all, some of the best PC controllers also utilize plastic materials, and they still feel as good as ever.

Cooling Grilles and USB Hubs

Stylized grilles at the front and back of the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel add a touch of flair to its otherwise simple chassis. Not only do they serve an aesthetic purpose, but they conceal active onboard cooling as well. The smooth operation of the cooling fan impressed me, delivering no noticeable noise during gameplay. However, even when the Xbox Series X and Logitech G Pro were fully switched off, the fan insisted on purring unless the USB cable was disconnected. Quite the enthusiastic fan, I must say!

Around the back, the USB hub offers convenient connection points for external accessories like the G Pro Pedals and gear shifter. While this USB-centric approach saves valuable USB ports on gaming PCs, it’s worth noting that the G920 pedals are not compatible without a paid adapter. So, if you’re upgrading from an older Xbox steering wheel, make sure to check if your pedals are compatible.

Features That Put the “Pro” in Logitech G Pro

Under your fingertips, you’ll find magnetic gear shift paddles that offer a wonderful tactile experience. The crisp and responsive movement, coupled with a satisfying clack sound, creates a truly immersive racing feel. Additionally, dual-clutch paddles provide even greater travel and smoothness. You can customize the buttons and paddles to suit your preferences using Logitech’s G Hub software or the onboard controls, adding a nice touch of accessibility.

Speaking of buttons, the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel boasts an impressive array of inputs neatly arranged in what Logitech calls its “thumbsweep layout.” While they are within reach, I found that apart from the outer letter buttons, most of them required me to adjust my hand position. However, the two twist knobs were a welcome feature, even though they had limited support in the Xbox games I played.

Next-Level Pedals That Demand Praise

Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel

From a design and build standpoint, the Logitech G Pro Pedals steal the show. These pedals come with a hefty price tag, costing more than the complete Logitech G920 wheel and pedal combo. However, they offer a lot more customization and functionality. The three large pedals provide ample space and can be individually adjusted to fit your preference. You can even remove one pedal if you prefer a two-pedal setup. The metal faceplates ensure durability, while the textured plastic surface offers ample grip to keep your feet in place.

Furthermore, the load cell brake pedal operates on pressure rather than distance, making it a bit challenging to get used to at first. But once you master it, the control and precision it offers is unmatched. The combination of different elastomers allows you to fine-tune the firmness of the brake, providing an even more realistic racing experience. Trust me, the improved G Pro Pedals made a significant difference in my lap times in games like F1 23.

Unleash the Power of the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel

If you’re considering upgrading to the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel, chances are you’re already familiar with belt or gear-driven options. Well, get ready for an upgrade that will blow your mind. The switch to direct drive technology is a game-changer, providing a level of realism and immersion that is hard to beat.

Once I bolted the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel to my Playseat Trophy Logitech G Edition, the difference between it and my previous gear-driven G920 was astonishing. The smoothness and realism combined to create an entirely new level of gaming experience. It felt like I was no longer using a controller; instead, I was transported into the seat of a virtual car, completely immersed in the game. In short, it was an absolute delight. And when paired with the Playseat Trophy racing seat, I might as well have been on the actual track.

Feel the Force, TrueForce, and More

The Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel offers remarkable force feedback that sets it apart from other racing wheels. It’s like upgrading from your TV’s built-in speakers to a full-blown gaming sound system with 7.1 surround sound. It’s the same thing, but with a lot more detail and impact. Even without TrueForce support in some games, the standard force feedback already feels amazing.

TrueForce technology takes things even further by providing tactile feedback based on the game engine, simulating the texture of the road surface and curbs. While not many games fully support TrueForce, I did notice a difference in games like GRID (which does support it). But even in games without TrueForce, like F1 23 and Forza Horizon 5, the force feedback was top-notch. The main takeaway? The Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel delivers an incredible gaming experience.

A Price Worth the Pleasure?

It’s true, there’s no hiding from the elephant in the room – the price. With the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel coming in at £999/$999 and the G Pro Pedals adding another £349/$349, it’s a substantial investment. Especially considering that other brands offer direct drive options at a lower price point. However, when it comes to the Logitech G Pro racing setup, you truly get what you pay for. The exceptional quality, advanced features, and immersive experience make it worth every penny.

Our Test Drive

During our testing phase, we used the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel and Pedals with an Xbox Series X for a couple of weeks. We secured the wheel to the Playseat Trophy Logitech G Edition, but it can also be clamped to a desk without the need for a specialized cockpit seat.

We put the wheel through its paces in a variety of games, including F1 23, GRID, and Forza Horizon 5. We experimented with different settings on the G Pro Wheel and tried out various springs and elastomers in the G Pro Pedals. Throughout the testing process, we compared our experience with the Logitech G920 to get a better sense of the upgrade.

Conclusion: A Joyride for Serious Racers

To borrow a line from Max Verstappen, the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel and G Pro Pedals are simply lovely. Like Verstappen’s Red Bull F1 car, these racing peripherals are high-quality upgrades that deliver exceptional results. Not only did they provide an immersive and realistic racing experience, but they also made me a better sim racer, improving my lap times.

Yes, the price may deter some, but if you’re willing to invest in the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a joyride worth taking, bringing the thrill of the track right into your gaming setup.
