Xbox Boss Teases Final Fantasy Games Coming to Xbox

Final Fantasy 14

At the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2023, something amazing happened. Xbox boss Phil Spencer, accompanied by Square Enix boss Takashi Kiryu, took the stage to celebrate the long-awaited announcement that Final Fantasy 14 is finally making its way to Xbox consoles. After years of PlayStation exclusivity, it’s about time the Xbox community got a taste of the Final Fantasy goodness.

But that’s not all. It seems the folks at Microsoft have been working some magic behind the scenes. GameTopic had the opportunity to interview Phil Spencer at gamescom 2023 and asked the burning question: will the PlayStation exclusives Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 16 also find their way to the Xbox? The answer? Well, it’s not a straight-up “yes,” but it definitely gave us hope.

“I recognize that when people buy an Xbox, they want to make sure the great games they want to play are coming,” confessed Spencer. “If there’s any publisher out there where that hasn’t been true, Square’s one of the top.”

It seems Microsoft has been cozying up to Square Enix, with Spencer and Sarah Bond (Corporate Vice President, Game Creator Experience and Ecosystem at Microsoft) flying to Tokyo to have conversations and spending a lot of time with the Square crew. Now, we’re not saying it’s a done deal, but things are definitely looking bright for Xbox fans craving some Final Fantasy love.

“We’ve got business deals and relationships to work through for certain games,” Spencer confessed, with a playful twinkle in his eye. “But having the CEO of one of the third-parties make a commitment to the platform was a really meaningful step.”

So, what’s the verdict? Well, it seems we’ll have to keep our ears perked for further announcements. Spencer isn’t about to pressure Square Enix into revealing their plans prematurely. These things take time, you know. But hey, the fact that Square has made a commitment to Xbox is a big deal. And let’s not forget, Final Fantasy 14 was a pretty significant step in that commitment.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Speaking of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, let’s not forget that it launched back in April 2020 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Sure, there’s been talk of an Intergrade version for PlayStation 5 and PC, but what about Xbox? Square Enix has been tight-lipped on that front. As for Final Fantasy 16—well, it may have launched as a PS5 exclusive in June, but a PC version is currently in the works. Again, no mention of an Xbox release.

Interestingly, during the recent FTC v. Microsoft trial, it came to light that Xbox seriously considered buying Square Enix back in 2019. Square Enix popped up repeatedly during the trial, with Final Fantasy 16 being used as an example of the exclusive games PlayStation was snatching up. It became clear that Xbox considers a diverse library of games to be sGameTopicingly important, and missing out on titles like Final Fantasy 16 just wasn’t an option.

So, Xbox fans, keep your fingers crossed. We may not have all the answers just yet, but Spencer’s confident words and Xbox’s commitment to striking deals speak volumes. Until then, if you’re in need of a catchup, make sure to check out everything announced at gamescom Opening Night Live 2023.
