Star Wars Outlaws: Is Kyle Katarn Making a Triumphant Return?

Kyle Katarn

Ah, Star Wars, the never-ending saga that has captured the hearts of fans for decades. With so much content to sink our teeth into, it’s no wonder that sometimes the canon can get a little confusing. But fear not, my fellow Jedi and Sith apprentices, for I am here to guide you through the intricate web of Star Wars lore, in a way that is as entertaining as a Wookiee roaring with laughter.

Enter Star Wars Outlaws, a game that is set to whisk us away to a galaxy far, far away once again. This time, however, we’ll have the freedom to explore it at our own pace. It’s like being handed the keys to the Millennium Falcon and told, “Kid, go have some fun.” And I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty stellar to me.

In this RPG adventure, we’ll stumble upon a cast of characters, both old and new. And there’s one familiar face, or rather, a familiar scoundrel, that has fans everywhere buzzing with excitement. I’m talking about none other than Kyle Katarn, the rogue mercenary turned Jedi hero.

For those of you who may need a refresher, Kyle Katarn first made his debut in the expanded universe in 1995’s Star Wars: Dark Forces. He started off as a simple hired gun for the Rebellion, tasked with stopping the formidable Dark Trooper program. But his journey didn’t end there. Oh no, this scruffy-looking nerf herder went on to become a Jedi in the aftermath of the Empire’s fall, training a new generation of Force-wielders alongside none other than Luke Skywalker himself.

Now, the exciting part. In the first story trailer for Star Wars Outlaws, eagle-eyed fans have spotted a character that bears a striking resemblance to our favorite gun-slinging, lightsaber-wielding hero, Kyle Katarn. Going by the name of Jaylen, this mysterious figure appears to be an associate of the game’s protagonist, Kay Vess, waiting for her on board her ship.

But here’s the million-credit question: Does this mean Kyle Katarn is making a glorious return to the Star Wars canon? The answer is not as far-fetched as you might think. In the Legends universe, Katarn spends a good chunk of his life as a mercenary, running with a rough crowd after the Empire ruthlessly took the lives of his parents. So, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if he ended up crossing paths with Kay Vess in Star Wars Outlaws.

Of course, there are a couple of tweaks that would need to be made to Kyle Katarn’s original story in order to fit him into the current canon. In Dark Forces, he’s tasked with stealing the Death Star plans, but thanks to the events of Rogue One, that part of his past would need a bit of a rewrite. Additionally, his mission to put a stop to the Dark Trooper program would need some adjustment since The Mandalorian established that Moff Gideon was the one pulling the strings on that one.

Now, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s unlikely that Star Wars Outlaws will bring Kyle Katarn back into the canon. However, as true fans know, hope is as persistent as a swarm of Jedi midichlorians. Until the game is released, we can still dream of wielding the Force alongside our favorite scruffy-looking, blaster-wielding hero.

So set your hyperspace coordinates for 2024, my friends, because that’s when Star Wars Outlaws will be gracing our screens on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Prepare yourself for an adventure filled with excitement, danger, and the possibility of encountering everyone’s favorite Star Wars outlaw… or should I say, Outlaw.

May the Force be with you, always!
