Mortal Kombat 1: A Whole New Universe with Sub-Zero’s Twist

Fans, get ready for the next Mortal Kombat game, because it’s bringing a brand new era to the franchise! In Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath DLC, Fire God Liu Kang kicks some serious butt and ends up with the Hourglass, a device that lets him bend space and time. With his universe in ruins, Liu Kang decides to hit the reset button and create a whole new universe where peace reigns and his friends are alive. Welcome to Mortal Kombat 1, where things are about to get wild!

But wait, this isn’t the same old Mortal Kombat tournament you remember. Mortal Kombat 1 takes us back to the beginning, before all the chaos began. Familiar faces and places are here, but there’s a twist. Many iconic characters now have completely different backstories. Let’s take a closer look at one of them – Sub-Zero!

What’s the Deal with Sub-Zero?

In the original Mortal Kombat timeline, not one, but two characters don the Sub-Zero mantle. First up is Bi-Han, the original Sub-Zero and a member of the Lin Kuei clan. He gets manipulated by Quan Chi to hunt and kill Scorpion, but little does he know, Quan Chi is posing as him while wiping out the Shirai Ryu clan. Scorpion gets his revenge in the first Mortal Kombat tournament, ending Bi-Han’s icy reign. But fear not, Bi-Han’s brother, Kuai Liang, takes up the Sub-Zero mantle and fights alongside Raiden’s Earthrealm warriors. Meanwhile, the Lin Kuei warrior Smoke gets kidnapped and turned into a cyborg for Shao Kahn. Talk about a frosty family affair!

In later games, Kuai Liang becomes the leader of the Lin Kuei, mentors an apprentice named Frost, and uncovers a shocking truth. Noob Saibot, the shadowy assassin, is revealed to be his resurrected brother, Bi-Han, now working for Quan Chi. Family reunions don’t get much weirder than this!

The Clash of Timelines

Fast forward to Mortal Kombat 2011, where Raiden messes with time like a kid with a new toy. He sends a message to his past self, rebooting the timeline back to the first Mortal Kombat tournament. Sub-Zero’s early storyline stays pretty similar to the original, with Scorpion taking revenge on Bi-Han and Kuai Liang stepping up as the new Sub-Zero. But things take a turn here. Instead of Smoke becoming a cyborg, it’s Sub-Zero who gets the icy upgrade. And instead of waiting years, Noob Saibot crashes the party just a few days after the tournament. Talk about fashionably late! Luckily, Sub-Zero smacks him down real quick. But the story doesn’t end there. Sindel takes matters into her own hands, killing Sub-Zero and sending him straight to the Netherrealm. Yikes!

In Mortal Kombat X, Raiden resurrects Kuai Liang, who becomes the grandmaster of the Lin Kuei. Phew, that’s a lot of twists and turns in the Sub-Zero saga!

The Icy Hot Mystery of Mortal Kombat 1

Now, let’s talk about Mortal Kombat 1 and its version of Sub-Zero. From what we’ve seen so far, it seems to follow a similar pattern, with a few big changes. This time, Sub-Zero is still Bi-Han, and guess what? His brother is now Scorpion! Kuai Liang hasn’t made an appearance in Mortal Kombat 1’s marketing yet, so Bi-Han might be in some serious trouble. Throughout every timeline, Bi-Han has met a tragic fate at Scorpion’s hands. Will history repeat itself in Mortal Kombat 1, making the brotherly bond even more heartbreaking? Only time will tell!

Mortal Kombat 1 drops on September 19, bringing the action to Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Get ready to unleash your inner fighter and dive into a whole new universe of epic battles and frosty family drama!
